The Role of a Light bulb

Materiality is a very important part of architecture. Not only can the choice of a material affect the way one interacts with a space but also the way the material is treated and where can have a huge influence.
Within this module, the task given was to take a material commonly not used within architecture and to investigate and experiment with it to get a full understanding of the material. Once a full understanding of the chosen material has been reached, the final task was to use this understanding to change the way in which someone interacts with the building.
My groups chosen material was copper sulphate. During experimentation with the material we discovered that after the material has been crystallised it reflects and glistens in the surrounding light but does not allow light to pass through the material. From this we had the idea to use the material to affect how one interacts with artificial light within the building.
In our final exhibition, we displayed the transition of a light bulb as a it goes from a functional, unappreciated building material to a purely aesthetic one that focuses the occupants attention rather than the occupant neglecting the presence of the light bulb.
